Most shocking looks from the MTV Video Music Awards

Practically no celebs were playing it safe this year style-wise at the MTV Video Music Awards. In fact, it was hard to know where to look with so many eye-catching ensembles. The theme this year was certainly shock and awe, and performers donned intriguing jewelry that only enhanced their outfits.

When you're aiming to turn heads at your next event or even strolling down the street, take a cue from these on-trend entertainers and incorporate some baubles from fine jewelers into you daily wardrobe.

Selena Gomez
Selena is definitely no Disney princess anymore. Recently, the starlet  has been taking a turn for the bold, going for a more sophisticated look on the red carpet lately, and the VMAs were no different. "I wanted to do something simple," she said, according to People magazine. Her version of "simple" entailed a sultry navy Atelier Versace gown with bejeweled seams that featured a slit all the way up one side, showing off some serious leg. The bustline opened up, too, revealing a black lacy corset. With her long, flowing locks and pointy platinum pumps, Gomez still managed to look elegant despite the provocative attire. Her only piece of jewelry was a pair of bright green chandelier earrings, which contrasted nicely with red nails and fuchsia lips. Not only did she sport a winning look, but the singer went home with the Best Pop Video award for Best Pop Video "Come & Get It."

Miley Cyrus
Miley is another starlet that has transformed dramatically in the last couple years. While she's donned some shocking outfits as of late, this ensemble may have topped it all. Two tightly wound hair knots that recall '90s Gwen Stefani and striking matte red lipstick were already an edgy start. Still, her off-the-shoulder Dolce & Gabbana crop top and matching high-waisted leggings were the main attraction, with multi-colored jewel embellishments on the sleeves, waistband and even one thigh. Since the outfit itself had baubles attached, she kept her jewelry relatively simple: just a crystal ring, delicate choker and matching studs. She even had Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez rocking out during her performance, according to E! Entertainment News.

Taylor Swift
Swift certainly looked like trouble when she walked in wearing a stunning, body-hugging navy gown with a glittering bust and plunging neckline. Crimson lips and fingernails added a certain old Hollywood glamor, as did her Marilyn-esque tousled blonde ringlets. To correspond with her dramatic gown, she had on sparkling two-tier drop earrings. The singer was recognized for more than just fashion-forward choices at the VMAs, however. She took home the Best Female Video trophy for "I Knew You Were Trouble." During her acceptance speech, she thanked "who I wrote this song about cause you know who you are and now I have this award." According to E! Entertainment News, MTV then cut to her former boyfriend, Harry Styles of One Direction. Swift is surely no stranger to getting sweet revenge on exes by writing hit tunes about them.

Ellie Goulding
Even though the British singer didn't go home with the award for Best Song of the Summer (it went to One Direction), she still attracted some significant attention in her floor-length, studded pale gown with a slit up to her thigh. The pop star kept her hair and makeup minimal, as well as her jewelry. She donned matching nude suede platform pumps and several understated rings to complete the outfit. Any more baubles would have been overwhelming, considering the dress was completely covered in spiky silver studs from the high neckline to the bottom hem.
